Abstract
Recently, big data from various sources have become increasingly available, easier to access, and are used for various purposes. In the health sector, collected data from national surveys, cohort studies, health insurance, and disease registries include sensitive information on individuals. Therefore, strong data protection has become an increasingly important issue. This article is an overview of the basic concept and method of de-identification including examples of de-identification in government agencies in Korea and the United States.
We also discuss the relationship and trade-off between privacy protection and data quality.
